"And the bird talked," she said, ignoring his interruption.

Eileen's story

Eileen is born as the daughter of Mary and Brian O' Malley and sister of Liam in Canada.

Her appearance resembles her mother's: her hair is of the same reddish shine and her eyes are glittering in a similar green. As her mother leaves them shortly after her birth, she is mainly raised and educated by her brother who changes his attitude towards her from jealousy to a caring brotherly love.

She grows up next to her father and her brother and spends her childhood sitting alone in a willow tree near their house with the view on the close river, thinking and talking to birds. Her traits of character become more and more 'Mary-like'.

The day when Exodus Crow brings her dead mother back is some kind of turning point in her live. The only souvenir of her mother is a small  box with two braided curls in it, a red one from  'Moira' and a dark one from the dead sailor who once took Mary away.

During Exodus'  stay she recognizes her relationship towards nature and especially to her totem, the crow. She keeps talking to birds when Exodus is away again.

Some time after that, her father dies. Eileen and Liam are more distant than ever before. They both live their own lives practically ignoring each other's way of living.

One day, Osbert Sedgewick, the former landlord of their parents, appears on the other side of the river. He invites himself to stay with them for several weeks. Eileen disapproves his presence and his negative influence on  Liam.

When they discover that there is gold on their property, Osbert buys the land from Liam.

The siblings move away to find the white house on the shore of Moira Lake, Liam has been fascinated by since his first memory.
