The Famine In the years 1845 -1849 there was a great disaster in Ireland. The Irish peasants lost their main food, the potatoes, because of a devastating potato disease. In those four years, more than 1 million peasants starved or emigrated because the British government did nearly nothing to provide them with food. On the contrary, they exported livestock and grain from Ireland to Britain. This time is called "The Great Hunger" or "The Famine". |
