Unit 2: the city
Unit 3: history of Perth
Unit 4: Schools in Perth
Unit 5: some special aspects

Why Perth?

Perth is just a city in Australia. Just a city? Isn't there something special about each single city in the world? Perth is an Australian city just as Hanover is a German city. And of course Dortmund, Magdeburg, Aurich and Berlin. They can't be compared and are all different? Exactly, the same can be said about Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth! They are all Australian cities and yet they are all different. So let's have a look at Perth, just to see what's going on there.

Unit 1: Where is Perth?

Task One: Find out the geographical location of Perth so that you know where it exactly is. Just take your atlas and look it up (much easier than on the web!!). If you want to look up the location of Perth on the web, this link will help you:

Expedia Maps: http://www.expediamaps.com/

If the "Encarta WorldAtlas" is available, use it as well, please.

And now use all the methods you know from Geography to work out loads of information on different aspects of Perth, WA.

Fast Facts -Overview: http://www.westernaustralia.net/fast_facts/index.shtml
  • prepare a map of Australia (draw it from your atlas, find it on the web, etc.)
  • sum up geographical information worth knowing about Perth
  • work out the distances to the neighbouring big cities (with more than a million inhabitants) next to Perth and not only in Australia
  • etc.

Task Two: Perth is not just a city, there's a countryside around it. What does it look like? What is worth knowing and telling the others?

Goldfields: http://www.westernaustralia.net/discover/goldfields/index.shtml

and more: http://www.westernaustralia.net/discover/index.shtml

Well then, now you know where Perth is and what it looks like around the town. Have you prepared your notes (textfile with graphics) and saved them as a .doc-file?

Unit 2: Perth - The City & what's interesting about Perth?

Aim: Getting in touch with what the city looks like and what's going on there. After looking at some of the following links you should be able to sum up some information about the city of Perth. You might want to prepare an oral presentation of your results, supported by a text-file with the main facts and perhaps some images, too. Don't forget to collect useful vocabulary as well, please.

Unit 3: History and development of Perth

Aim: To learn about details of the settlement which is mainly connected with convicts and convict labour.

Step 1: A quick overview

Fast Facts - WA History: http://www.westernaustralia.net/fast_facts/history/index.shtml

...and if you think Captain James Cook is important as well, see which role he played in the history of Australia in general.

Step 2: Details on the topic "Convicts"

Please work out facts and details worth knowing about convicts: These were people, at their time regarded as criminals, who were sent as prisoners from Britain to Australia

Convicts: Crime in 18th century England and what to do with criminals?   (detailed information from an Australian CD-ROM for pupils)

brief information on convicts in Western Australia

Step 3: Details on the settlement of Perth, WA

Now you should be able to research the development of Perth from the first European explorers to a real city:
