Kofi Annan
60 year old life-long international servant Kofi Annan was born to a prominent family in the former British-ruled African Colony of the Gold Coast. His father and other male ancestors were the paramount chiefs of the Fante people.
Annan holds degrees from Macalester College, Minnesota and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is married and has three children.
Since 1962 the war held UN posts in Europe, Africa and New York. In the mid 1970´s he took two years off to return to Ghana and to help developing national Tourism.
In 1990, after the invasion of Kuwait, the UN sent Annan to Iraq help negotiate the release of hostages and the safe passage of 500.000 stranded Asian workers which he succeeded in and brought the people back home.
In march 1993, he was named UN under-secretary - general for peacekeeping operations.
Annan became the United Nation's seventh Secretary- General in January 1997.
