Characterisation of Zaphod

Zaphod on Magrathea

Zaphod Beeblebrox is a flat character in the “Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, because he never changed his mind.  He is the president of the Galaxy and he is very good in his job. (“... He was ideal presidency fodder” ,p.32).

They said about Zaphod on page 32: “Zaphod Beeblebrox, adventurer, ex-hippy, goodtimer, (crook? Quite possible), manic self-publicist, terribly bad at personal relationsships, often thought to be completely out to lunch.”

He has two heads and and two arms but “He steered with an extra arm he’d recently had fitted just beneath his right one to help improve his ski-boxing” (p. 33). Zaphod is twohundred years old.

He loves effects, it iswhat he was the best at (p. 34).

Zaphod is Ford Prefect's semi-cousin. They often played together in when they were children. For example they stopped the spaceship of the president and wanted to have conkers (p.157).

Arthur had already met Zaphod on earth. There was a fancy-dress-party and Zaphod “gatecrashed” it. There he met Trillian. He knows that Ford had lived on the earth for more then 15 years. He could have visited him and taken him with him. But Zaphod is an egoistic person, so he had never spent a thought about Ford. He isn’t a nice person, he only takes care about himself.

Zaphod wants to find the planet Magrathea. He know this from the President Yooden Vranx and becomes very nervous, when he finds Magrathea.

Moreover Zaphod isn’t a very intelligent person. For example is Trillian the one who really is in charge of the Heart of Gold.

It’s very easy for Zaphod to become friends with women. He makes it in an very easy way and he is always successful. On the party in England for example, it was no problem for him to go away with Trillian (and thereby annoy Arthur, who was originally talking to her).
