Futurama – The Facts:

Futurama was developed and created by  Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. Matt Groening was born 1954 in Portland,Oregan and was also the developer of “The Simpsons” (1987 for FOX). David X. Cohen was born in New York and since 1993 he was an author for “The Simpsons” (later he was Exectuve Producer) and since 1995 he worked for the serie Futurama. Futurama is a series which is set in the 31st century. It has a very simple and easy, but very, very funny and unpredictable humour.

                               Futurama - The Story:

It is 31.12.1999 when Fry, a young pizza delivery boy, has a delivery to a cyronetic laboratory in New York. There he has a little accident and falls into a freezebox. When he awakes it is the 01.01.3000 and he meets Leela, who works in the cyronetic studio in New New York. In his new world, Fry must work as a delivery boy but he doesn't want that and escapes. On his escape he meets Bender, a robot, who wants to die. They become friends. They escape together but Leela can catch them. When Fry tells Leela his story, Leela feels compassion for him. They become friends and escape together.
Fry searches for his family and finds his 149-year-old great great great.... nephew Prof. Farnsworth. Prof. Farnsworth is a scientist with a delivery company called "Planet Express". Fry, Leela and Bender start to work for Prof. Farnsworth and his intergalactic delivery service. There they meet Dr. Zoidberg, Hermes Conrad and Amy Wong.
Sometimes they meet Zapp Brannigan, an arrogant person and his assistant Kif, who is a manically depressed, but also strange-looking alien. So they travel from planet to planet and meet strange planets, races and guys and often have much fun (or not).

 

Futurama - The Persons

Fry Philip J. Fry was born 1974. In the 20th Century he was a pizzaboy at Panucci's Pizza. He had 93c on the bank and three heart attacks caused of too much cola. His friend was Richie and his girlfriend was Michelle.In the year 3000 he lives with Bender in the Robot-Arms House, Apartment No. 00100100. He works with Leela and Bender as an intergalactic Delivery-boy for the Planet Express. His favourite TV Shows are "All my Circuits"And "Sanford & Son".
Bender His real name is Bender Unit 22 and he was made out of recycled Beer tins. He is cleptomanic, alcoholic, smoker and a fan of robot pornography. His favourite TV show is "All my circuits". For a short time he was an energy-junkie. His favourite holiday place is Rubanukah, the holiest week in the robot calendar. When he wanted to commit suicid he met Fry and from this point on they have been friends.
Leela Leela is the pilot of the Planet Express team. She has only one eye, because she is an alien, but she doesn't know where she is from. She is ca. 25 years old. Before she worked for the Planet Express, she was "Fate Assignment Officer". She had a few sex affairs with Zapp Brannigan, but she hates him. She loves her pet Nibbler. She is a big fan of blernsball, a game like baseball, but much more difficult.
Prof. Farnsworth With at least 149 years he is the oldest scientist in the 31. Century. He is professor at the Mars University. He is very very intelligent, but very senile, too, and so he forgets most of the inventions he made in the past. He is the owner of the Planet Express. He is the great-great-great-great…great-nephew of Fry. His hobbies are the collecting of cables with different lenghts and the building of spaceships. His greatest enemy is Prof Wernstrom.
Zapp Brannigan Zapp Brannigan is a very arrogant person who thinks that he is the greatest and most beautiful man in the universe. He often brings the Planet Express Crew and most people in the universe in difficult situations.
Kif Kroker Kif Kroker is the assistant of Zapp Brannigan. He is often very depressive, because he has to work with Zapp Brannigan. He loves Amy Wong.
Dr. Zoidberg He is a lobster from the planet Crustacia. He is a very strange person, but mostly harmless. It is unknown WHY he works for the Planet Express.
Amy Wong She works at the Planet Express. She has very rich parents. She is sometimes very forgetful. She had a sex affair with Fry.
Hermes Conrad He is the leader of the Planet Express Office. He is a great Limbo-Dancer. But he is very prevail-addicted and narrow-minded. His name refers to the Greek god, of course.



Comparison – The story:

The stories of Futurama and HHGG are very similar. They are not alike, just very similar. In HHGG Arthur Dent loses his house and his planet and has to travel with Ford Prefect through the galaxy. In Futurama Fry loses not his home but his time. He arrives in the 31. Century, but the place where he lives is the same ( New York à New New York). His new friends - above all Zapp Brannigan - have many similarities with Arthur's friends. In HHGG and in Futurama Arthur and his friends and Fry and his friends travel trough the galaxy and visit strange planets and meet mad aliens. But the striking simliarity is the humour, which is simple, easy, funny and unpredictable. These unrealistic things, these more than braindead inventions, these absolutely crazy happenings…

Zapp Brannigan Zaphod Beeblebrox Both successful captains. Have much power. Are liked by the people in the universe. Same initials (!). Very arrogant and think they are the best and greatest in the universe. Very very stupid. Have assistents.
Kif Kroker Marvin Assistens of Z.B. Manically depressed because they suffer under their arrogant bosses.
Prof. Farnsworth Slartibartfast Very difficult and strange names. Hyper-intelligent. Very old.

3 robots for Charlie
It seems that the persons in Futurama were copied by the persons of HHGG.
BUT Groening and Cohen missed their goal absolutely. The persons of Futurama are the worst imitation you can imagine. Prof. Farnsworth ist hyper-intelligent, but he is as forgetful as a filter. He forgets his own inventions and makes the invention again and again. Fry is not as intelligent as Arthur, he is a fool. Not stupid, but a fool… he makes strange and stupid things. Trillian is the girlfriend of Zaphod, but Leela hates Zapp Brannigan although she slept with him (more than one time). Some facts are just exchanged. In Futurama the robot is arrogant, extrovert and self-confident. In HHGG the robot is just manically depressed and a misery rag. But this bad copy of HHGG is intended, because if it wasn't so strange and stupid it wouldn't be sooooo funny.
